| Reaction to dilute hydrochloric acid (HCL) | |||||
| Two minerals in your box will react with dilute HCL. Calcite is a carbonate mineral, as is Dolomite. Calcite will react strongly to HCL applied to its surface with an eye dropper. Dolomite will only react slightly when powdered, either by scraping the surface of the mineral sample to produce a powder or by scratching the dolomite onto a ceramic plate and then applying the acid to the powder. In both cases, the bubbles produced are carbon dioxide (CO2). | |||||
